Runes

Runes are an ancient divination tool, widely used by witches and spiritual seekers alike. Runes have roots in Germanic and Norse traditions. They offer insight into life’s questions. Runes help users navigate their paths with greater clarity. Learning rune reading can be enriching, giving you a direct way to connect with their mysterious and symbolic meanings.

The word “rune” means mystery, whisper, or secret. A rune set consists of small stones or other materials etched with symbols from an ancient alphabet. The most commonly used runic alphabet is the Elder Futhark. It is an ancient Germanic script with 24 symbols. Each symbol stands for a sound and has a symbolic meaning. Over time, runic alphabets evolved. The Anglo-Saxon Futhorc included 33 symbols. The Younger Futhark was popular in Scandinavia until the 17th century.

Rune symbols and their meanings

Beyond being letters, each rune holds significant meanings rooted in the cultures of its origins. These traditional meanings continue to resonate with modern rune readers. Some examples of symbols from the Elder Futhark alphabet include:

  • Fehu (F): Symbolizes cattle and wealth, symbolizing abundance and prosperity.
  • Uruz (U): Stands for a wild ox, representing strength and determination.
  • Thurisaz (T): Means thorn or giant, symbolizing protection or challenge.
  • Hagalaz (H): Stands for hail, symbolizing disruption or transformation.
  • Ansuz (A): Ancestral god, symbolizing wisdom and communication.
  • Raidho (R): Wagon or chariot, representing travel or progress.
  • Kenaz (K): Beacon or torch, symbolizing knowledge and insight.
How to use runes

Runes guide readers by offering insights into possible outcomes or factors influencing a situation, rather than giving definitive answers. They encourage intuitive interpretation, leaving room for personal reflection. Rune readers understand that the future is fluid, empowering individuals to make their own choices. If a rune reading doesn’t align with your hopes, you have the power to shift your path.

Runes can be particularly useful when dealing with limited information, helping you uncover hidden aspects of your situation. This makes them a valuable tool in times of uncertainty or change.

Getting started with rune reading

To start reading runes, find a quiet space to focus. Center your mind on the question or issue you want guidance on. Spread a cloth in front of you to place the runes. Beginners start with a simple one-rune draw. They should focus on the symbol’s message. Then, meditate on its relevance to their question.

As you grow more comfortable, you can experiment with various rune layouts, akin to tarot spreads. Multiple-rune casts give a more complex view of a situation, highlighting various influences and helping you understand the broader picture.

The three rune layout is a beginner-friendly method. To start, pick three runes at random from your rune bag and place them on the table in the following order:

  • Rune 1: On the right side.
  • Rune 2: In the middle.
  • Rune 3: On the left side.

Here’s what each rune represents:

  • Rune 1: The overview of your situation or question.
  • Rune 2: A challenge or obstacle you’re facing.
  • Rune 3: A suggested action or path you could take.

The five rune layout is a little more detailed. For this, you will choose five runes and lay them down in the following cross pattern:

  • Rune 1: In the center.
  • Rune 2: To the left of the center (West).
  • Rune 3: Above the center (North).
  • Rune 4: Below the center (South).
  • Rune 5: To the right of the center (East).

This layout helps you see your past, present, and future:

  • Runes 2, 1, and 5: Show the past, present, and future.
  • Rune 4: Reveals what you need to accept about your situation.
  • Rune 3: Shows what help or support you might receive.

The nine rune layout is a deeper reading, ideal for understanding your spiritual path. For this layout:

  1. Think about your spiritual question and randomly choose nine runes.
  2. Hold them for a moment, then scatter them on your cloth.

In this layout:

  • Center runes: Represent your current situation.
  • Outer runes: Show influences that are less important or far away.
  • Nearby runes: May show supportive or complementary influences.
  • Opposite runes: Suggest conflicting forces or challenges.

First, focus on the runes that land face up, as they are the most important. Then, turn over the ones that landed face down to get more insight into future or outside influences.

These three rune layouts help guide you through different situations, from simple questions to deeper spiritual insights. They are a great way to start practicing rune reading and can be personalized to fit your needs.
